Evaluation Editing / Manuscript Critique

Evaluation editing takes a hard look at a manuscript to determine what form of editting is needed for a manuscript. The order in which a manuscript is as follows: Developmental/Strucctural Editing, Line/Stylistic Editing, Copy Editing, and Proofreading. Depending on the quaulity of the manuscript, all forms of editing may not be necessary. The questionn is, how to determine what form of editing is needed for a manuscript. This is the purpose of Evaluation Editing/Manuscript Critique. The editing scope is to take a hard look at a manuscript from the area of scope for a Developmental editor, Line Editor, Copy Editor, and Proofreader giving an assessment of the manuscript.

Developmental / Structural Editing

Developmental/Structura editing examines a manuscript as a whole. Developmental editing looks at:

Line Editing / Stylistic Editing

This form of editing is also known as Stylistic Editing. It looks at the fine details of a manuscript. A Line Editor evaluates a manuscript line-by-line focusing on:

  • Author's Voice
  • Sentece Structure
  • Story Flow
  • Subtext
  • Emphasis
  • Rythm
  • Clarity
